Building an ECO-FRIENDLY Off-Grid WASHING MACHINE
Does it WORK?
In today's video, I take on the challenge of building a simple off-grid, non-electric washing machine. The weather outside is cold and drizzly, making it the perfect day to work on this project indoors.
I found a cost-effective barrel here in Bulgaria, which will be the main component of the washing machine. Living off-grid in Bulgaria, I face the challenge of limited electricity, primarily relying on 600 Watt solar generators for essentials like the modem, camera, laptop, and phone.
A full solar installation is my ultimate vision, but for now, I'm exploring creative solutions for daily tasks. The washing machine design I'm attempting involves a barrel, an ordinary sanitary plunger, and a broomstick. I share step-by-step details of the process, including making a hole in the barrel lid, adapting the plunger with holes for effective agitation, and assembling the components into a manual washing machine.
I discuss the difficulties of working without power tools, emphasizing the importance of traditional techniques and the value of learning by doing. My background, influenced by my carpenter father, aids me in navigating these DIY challenges. The video also highlights the intentional, slower pace of off-grid living, allowing time for manual tasks and reducing dependence on electronic devices.
I share insights into the washing process, including filling the barrel, adding detergent, agitating the clothes, and rinsing. After an overnight soak, I demonstrate the effectiveness of the manual washing machine in removing dirt. The second day involves rinsing and hanging the clothes to dry, showcasing the simplicity of the process and the eco-friendly approach.
In the final verdict, I discuss the surprising cleanliness of the clothes and the minimal physical exertion required for the plunging process. While time-consuming, the project aligns with my slower, intentional lifestyle, emphasizing the value of time in the off-grid journey.
